Gum Surgery

Do You Need Gum Surgery?

Most of the time when our Draper, Utah dental patients come into our office, they are here for a regular cleaning, a minor filling, or some other type of fairly simple restorative repair or cosmetic dentistry solution.

However, there are also times when the procedure required to achieve or maintain a higher level of oral health is a little more complex and in-depth. In instances like these, gum surgery may be the only option.

Examples of When Gum Surgery May Be Needed

Though everyone is different, here are a few examples of when gum surgery—also known as oral surgery or maxillofacial surgery—may be necessary:

  • If your wisdom teeth need to be removed
  • If one or more of your teeth need to be extracted
  • If a dental implant is required to replace a missing tooth
  • If you’ve suffered severe damage or injury to your jaw, mouth, or teeth

Certain diseases or oral conditions may also require gum surgery as a form of treatment. This includes temporomandibular joint disorder (or TMJ as it is more commonly known), endodontic diseases (which are diseases involving an infection of inflammation within the tooth’s pulp), and periodontal surgery (think gingivitis and periodontitis).

Types of Gum Surgery Procedures

Depending on the reason for the gum surgery, this will dictate the type of procedure that will need to be performed.

For example, if the bone around a tooth’s root is damaged or, worse, destroyed, a bone graft may be required. This surgery involves putting a new bone in place of the old bone. In some cases, this new bone may be taken from some other area of your body, or it may be manufactured or donated.

Another type of gum surgery is called flap surgery. This procedure is often used if you have deep pockets where tartar deposits and is performed by lifting the gums from the teeth in order to effectively remove the buildup.

Many other types of gum surgery procedures exist, but these are a couple to consider.
